The name of U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.,is often mentioned as a possible candidate for the late Robert C. Byrd's senate seat. Capito talked this morning about the likelihood of such a campaign.
Capito said she'll wait until state lawmakers make their decision on a special election before she makes her decision.
The congresswoman said she thought she could legally run for re-election to the House and for the Senate seat at the same time.
"You know, that's a question I think is open to interpretation,” Capito said. “Several folks have looked at it and believe I could run for both offices at the same time. I'm not sure that's the direction I want to go. But, as I said, I want to keep my options open. We're just going to look at that after the decisions are made at the legislature and the law is changed. Right now, if there's a new law, there could be a lot of different ramifications.”
Capito said whomever fills the late Sen. Robert C. Byrd's seat will have to deal with a lot of tough issues.
"Cap and trade, which I think will damage our economy," she said. "We just passed a health bill that, had I been in the Senate, I would have fought tooth and nail. There are job creation issues that are not occurring. There is overspending and deficit and debt. These are the things that West Virginians care about". Whoever the candidates are, Capito said people should find out they would vote on such issues and make an informed choice.
